The Hicksville Exempted Village School district is a 40 square mile district in Northwest Ohio. It consists of one PreK-12 grade building. The elementary serves grades Pre-K-4, middle school is grades 5-8 and the high school is grades 9-12. The enrollment is approximately 1000 students.
The Hicksville School System is one of the area’s oldest and most established, serving the people of Hicksville since 1878. During its rich history, the district has come to be known for a commitment to excellence, serving all students in such a way that each and every child meets his or her full potential.
Hicksville Village Schools is the premier school district in the area, a result of the involvement of our parents and community members, the commitment of our staff members, and the spirit of our student body.
The Ohio Department of education regularly rates Hicksville Schools in the top 90% of all public schools in the state. District students score higher than similar districts and the state averages on state tests.
Large-school curricular offerings are part of our small-school setting with a broad array of academic disciplines and course offerings.
More than 80% of our faculty members hold advanced degrees. They are second to none when it comes to an attitude of providing “over and beyond” opportunities for the students of Hicksville Schools. Students are engaged in their learning through relevant, student-centered instructional strategies resulting in a deeper understanding and higher achievement of standards.
The administrative teams and staff of Hicksville Elementary, Middle School, and High School have a razor-sharp focus on school improvement through the use of educational best practices to constantly improve teaching and learning.
Regular grade-level collaboration at Hicksville Elementary allows teachers to study student data, guiding them in the development of meaningful lessons and grade-specific assessments that measure students’ mastery of state standards.
Hicksville Middle School/High School’s involvement in the school improvement models, Making Middle Grades Work and High Schools that Work, has led to the establishment of outstanding practices such as Senior Projects, and Math Labs for Algebra and Geometry. The Southern Region Education Board (SREB) has commended our school for its focus on high expectations, extra help, rigorous academic studies, and student engagement. As a result, Hicksville High School has been named a “Pacesetter School” by the SREB and was awarded with the High Schools that Work “Gold Achievement Award.”
Hicksville Village Schools offers a wide range of services for students with special needs. In conjunction with the Northwest Ohio Educational Service Center (NwOESC), the district offers services for students with disabilities ranging from specific learning disabilities to cognitive disabilities, vision and hearing impairments, and more. Beginning at age 3, children with identified delays receive assistance through the district’s preschool program to bridge the gaps in their development and prepare them for success in elementary school.
Throughout their educational careers, students are provided with extra help to master state standards and meet with success in each and every class. In addition to before and after-school programs, it is not unusual to find our teachers giving their conference and lunch times to work one-on-one with students.
At Hicksville Schools, we believe that each student can learn when given enough time, assistance, and opportunities.
In January 2009, the students and staff of Hicksville Village Schools moved into the district’s new, 148,000 square foot Pre-K through 12 school building, built as a partnership between the people of Hicksville and the Ohio School Facilities Commission.
An eighteen-member design team worked with the district’s architects to create a structure that reflects both form and function. The Hicksville school has quickly become known throughout Ohio as one of the state’s most functional and unique buildings.
The building was designed to pay tribute to the rich history of the Village of Hicksville. And though it is a building fully prepared to meet the needs of education in the Twenty-first Century, it makes unmistakable connections to our community’s past. A walk down the building’s
“Main Street,” which leads students, staff, and visitors to the school’s Commons and main performance areas, takes one back in time to the days of brick streets and gas-lit street lamps. Lining Main Street are windows to the past, which display the notable people, places, and events of our village from the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.
The Hicksville Village School District has long been known to set the pace in the area when it comes to the use of technology to enhance district curricula. The district was the first in northwest Ohio to establish a one-to-one laptop computer program for students in grades 5-12. Students use school-issued laptops to access textbooks, develop multi-media projects, and research both primary and secondary resources. Mobile labs, and hand-held devices at the elementary levels provide immediate, easy access to computers at every grade level.
Computers are used to maximize learning opportunities in 100% of the classrooms at our school with a special emphasis in technology-intensive areas such as Foundations of Computers, Desktop Publishing, and Multimedia Applications. All staff members incorporate technology-based teaching tools, including Smartboards, Wikis, Podcasts, and Streaming Video.
In addition technology is actively used as a communication tool with parents and the community. The district’s website offers user-friendly features such as the grade book, online fee payment, online forms, a district events calendar, teacher websites, and links to county and community organizations and businesses. Any type of message can be sent out to all districts parents within minutes via phone call, text message and email message through the use of the district’s Instant Messaging System.
Great things happen when schools and community partner together to provide excellence and opportunities for students, and Hicksville is a prime example of such a partnership. The district enjoys massive support from area businesses, organizations, and community members.
Each day Hicksville Schools sees dozens of volunteers giving their time to help the district meet its mission of providing a quality education that ensures each and every student learns to the best of his or her ability. An active mentoring program pairs a diverse group of adult volunteers with students who need additional support. The importance of volunteers doesn’t diminish when the school day ends. Volunteer coaches help to provide support to head coaches in our athletic programs, while volunteers are key ingredients at all school events.
Thousands of dollars in scholarships are given to graduating Seniors from area civic organizations and businesses. The school also enjoys the support of the Hicksville School Foundation, which provides funding for student and teacher development beyond the state’s minimum requirements. The Foundation, which is largely funded by donations from Hicksville alumni, has provided well over $100,000 in grant funds to Hicksville teachers since its-establishment in 2001.
Hicksville Village Schools consistently logs the lowest cost per pupil among area schools while at the same time being among the top tier of schools when it comes to results on state tests of achievement. Expenditures for administration, building operations, staff support, and pupil support are among the area’s lowest so that the largest share of expenditures can be focused on our primary job: instruction.
Careful management of district resources allows the district to operate within its means, as evidenced by only one increase in local taxes for operating funds since 1991. That’s a record any school district in the State of Ohio would be glad to own.
Hicksville High School students are offered vocational programming through Four County Career Center, located near Archbold, Ohio. In support of career-technical education’s primary goal of preparing students for successful employment, Four County Career Center provides job placement services, as well as advanced placement for qualified students. We are proud of our partnership with Four County career Center as they work to provide our students with career skills, real-world work experiences, and quality academics.
